As Swimmers Fled Danger, Popular Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her own backyard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard cracking sounds echoing across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the road, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up behind her. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running into something that surely every part of you would tell you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating numerous victims.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the beach facility beside the site of the incident transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the surf to save people needing help.

After the events, messages of gratitude were shared. One post shared thanks for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of beach patrol published a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and support. We are touched by the compassion directed at our team,” the organization commented. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the violence started through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores protected for the public, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the midst of such hatred.”
