Child of Former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terrorism Allegations as Trial Begins
The offspring of ex- South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked charges at the start of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.
The defendant, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on digital networks four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her dad.
A seven-day period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and fire-setting, left at least 300 individuals killed and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been accused of inciting this turmoil and faces charges of provocation to commit terror acts and public violence.
History of the Case
The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her legal representative earlier labelling the state's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also consistently said the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political disputes with her father after he started his own party and competed against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial harassment" against the former president and his family.
A handful of backers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders attended the proceedings inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and fails to provide concrete grounds for a conviction.
