EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
