Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
