A group of six quirky but resilient youngsters confront the path of a vast and dreadful otherworldly evil that has invaded our realm from the outer limits of shadow. They have no choice but to devote their lives fighting it, enduring one nightmare after another in the process.

An Echoing Storyline with a Fresh Approach

This describes the premise, in essence, of Stephen King’s novel It (arguably his finest; undeniable). It is also the plot of the celebrated author’s heir Joe Hill’s new horror doorstopper, in which a band of six call forth the primordial, infinitely malicious serpent the Dragon King from the Endless Night to assist them in vanquishing some antagonists. Unsurprisingly, their otherworldly invocation has unintended consequences.

Acknowledging a Family Lineage

Joe Hill began his writing journey going to great lengths to distance himself from his famous father, publishing under the pen name he continues to employ and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he bears a uncanny likeness to his dad). However, in his newest work, he leans into it. Several quotes that deliberately echo some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that recalls a King plot point (a battle of wits). In this epic story, the author rejoices in his family connection, and readers share in the joy.

Introducing the Main Characters

Returning to the group: the majority are students at the made-up the esteemed institution in Maine. First is Arthur, studious and brilliant, deciphering ancient puzzles in his free moments; another key figure, wealthy, clever, and prone to trampling anyone who stands in his way; the twin siblings; the attractive Allie herself. And there’s Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but becomes a key part of their group as they experiment, partly convinced, partly skeptical, in arcane arts.

The Critical Ceremony

Our hero becomes, due to circumstances beyond his control, forced into stealing prized manuscripts from his beloved college library by a set of regional villains. This wounds his academic spirit, particularly as he’s made to take the institution’s prized and unsettling title: the journal of occultist Enoch Crane (condemned “for dealing with infernal entities in 1703”; the binding is made from his skin). These young investigators read the journal, realize they are able to call forth what the occultist details as a “proud worm to assist Arthur with his blackmail problem – and occupy the subsequent narrative facing the fallout. King Sorrow will certainly eliminate those annoying regional antagonists, but they’ll have to choose a fresh offering each year or fall prey to the beast. As our protagonist states: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is additional horrors.”

Stylistic Dexterity and Imaginative Scope

Spanning forty years, Joe Hill transitions with seamless grace across narrative styles: as the allies strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, choosing undeniably wicked targets to offer up, or hunting down ways to kill the dragon themselves, we move between suspense to shadowy tale, covert operations to love story to terror. A standout transition was to a adventure narrative, deep in the caves under the English county, a section tinged by JRR Tolkien that was magnificently horrifying.

A Detailed Canvas of Dread and Optimism

The novel features trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and internet antagonists, properly scary and expertly realized. We see enchanted blades and betrayals, breath-taking moments of bravery and instances of appalling malevolence, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a chilling book that is primarily a ode to the creative spirit, and to devotion and companionship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the companions sit around the table, getting ready to invoke their serpent to life with the force of their minds.
