Lando Norris Wins Debut F1 World Title in Yas Marina Despite Max Verstappen's Race Win.

With a performance full of gutsy driving, Lando Norris has won his maiden Formula One world championship by securing P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A podium was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, despite the fact that Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

He delivered precisely what was required in an extremely intense contest at the Abu Dhabi track, featuring a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless execution from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Momentous Accomplishment for Britain and McLaren

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris is now the eleventh British driver to achieve this. This ends the team's drivers’ championship wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

This marks a stunning turnaround for the team, from a nadir in the mid-2010s when they ended up ninth in the constructors’ championship. The revival has been spearheaded by team principal Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient team with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two Teammates

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for a large part of the campaign, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the closing stages. A series of poor performances and some errors, including crashing out in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is too world champion material. To have been so competitive in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to force the fight down to the last race. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he did not quite have the points to overhaul Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution

Norris closed out his success with ruthless focus to take the crown that had been within reach but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the last two races. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

This represents no little achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough times, convinced they would return to the top. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to persist with his goal, maintaining his cool and belief even when under pressure. Having lost the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at maximising what he could.

The Title-Deciding Race

In the race, Verstappen held his lead through the first corner, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals quickly and displayed great composure in his driving.

On lap 19, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to hold up Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was investigated by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his championship bid.

Contrasting Fortunes

While Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the winter.
