Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
