The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
