The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced how he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
