Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
